Elaborately decorated eggs predate Easter by thousands of years! Ostrich eggs were luxury items in the ancient Mediterranean world going back many centuries to the iron ages. They were engraved, painted, and embellished with ivory, precious metals and jewelled fittings and were associated with wealth and status.
